Historic website to be launched by Minister

An exciting new website, recording one of the most momentous decades in history, will be launched next week in Castlebar library. Centenarymayo.ie will document all the major events that occurred in Ireland and also abroad from 1913 to 1923 as they relate to Mayo. World War One, the War of Independence, the Civil War, the women’s movement, as well as the every day life of the time will all be covered on the site.

Poetry Tree tour of Mayo

To celebrate All Ireland Poetry Day which happened in October, Mayo County Council’s arts office, library service, and Mayo Artsquad put out a call for submissions of inspiring poetry to dress a poetry tree designed by Artsquad artist Louisa Sloan. There was a great response to the call for poetry with some 160 submissions received to date. Poetry was received from primary and secondary school students, Active Retirement Associations, care settings, and writers groups.

Mayo County Council Arts Office, Library Service, and Artsquad will celebrate All Ireland Poetry Day which takes place on Thursday October 4. Mayo Artsquad members are using their creative abilities to design a poetry tree. They are also putting a call out for submissions of inspiring poetry to dress the tree.

Mayo Library is holding sales of old books in their Castlebar and Ballina branches for the next three weeks.

Mayo Library launches new audio download service

Mayo County Library is the first in Connacht and one of the first in the country to launch its new audio download service that allows members to download audio books directly to their PC, mobile phone, MP3 player or other portable device. From today the library provides access to over 600 bestselling unabridged audiobooks for every library member. The service is available in any library or indeed from a PC anywhere.
