The campaign to reopen the railway track linking Claremorris to Sligo in the north and Galway and Limerick in the south has run out of steam and should give way to proposals for a greenway route along the track instead.

The Great Western Greenway has been awarded first prize in the Exemplary Initiatives category at the sixth European Greenways awards ceremony in Portugal. Organised by the European Greenways Association, the awards promote examples of best practice in greenway development across Europe.

Mayo Fine Gael councillor Patsy O’Brien recently dismissed the idea of a greenway along the northern section of the Western Rail Corridor line, north of Claremorris, as “short term gain” and “ad-hockery”. I am not sure what he meant by this term, but the Sligo Mayo Greenway campaign says the idea should not be dismissed flippantly and needs to be examined as a realistic alternative to any proposed railway in the current climate.
