Galway’s new research vessel to be named the RV Tom Crean

The new Galway-based marine exploration research vessel to replace the Celtic Voyager is to be named RV Tom Crean after the Irish seaman and polar explorer in Antarctica. The new vessel is set to be completed in 2022 and be based in Galway Harbour where the port comprises a dock basin.

Marine Institute to cover distance from Renville to the North Pole in festive challenge to save lives at sea

Staff at the Marine Institute are embarking on a festive fundraising challenge in aid of the RNLI - they plan to to walk, run, row, cycle, and swim a total of 4,068km, equivalent to the distance from their headquarters in Renville, Galway to the North Pole. The fundraiser is a team challenge recognising the work of the RNLI Lifeboats Ireland, and they are inviting everyone to join in and support this worthy cause.

Galway Science and Technology Festival will present its 2020 annual Family Day Exhibition as a virtual event this year. It will be broadcast from GalwayScience.ie at 11am on Sunday November 22 and will be hosted by Clara Murray and John Sharpson of RTE Jnrs After School Hub.
