Liam Mellows' hurlers and their army of loyal supporters head to Thurles on Saturday to take on Dublin side Cuala in the eagerly anticipated All-Ireland senior club hurling semi-final at Semple Stadium (4pm).

We know that hurling was played in the Bohermore area 200 years ago. Several different clubs operated around there at different times — Galway City, Bohermore 98s, College Road, Thomas Ashe, etc. Players would occasionally transfer from one club to another so it was natural for them to join the new club that was formed on February 11, 1933. The club was called Liam Mellows after the patriot who led the 1916 rebellion in Galway.

Forty-seven years is a long time, and it is far too long for a progressive hurling club such as Liam Mellows not to have played in a Galway county senior hurling final.

Galway city senior hurling side Liam Mellows had an important 1-16 to 0-14 victory over Cappataggle in a top table clash in their Senior A - Group 1 game last weekend.

•Corinthians RFC, in association with Ulster Bank Galway, will be bringing the RBS Six Nations Trophy to Corinthian Park next Wednesday (February 22) with special guests Alan Quinlan, Luke Fitzgerald and a member of the Connacht squad. This night is open to all. At 5.45pm, Quinlan and Fitzgerald will take a training session with one of the club’s youth teams. Photo opportunities will be available from 6.30pm until 7.30pm, followed by a Q & A session.

LIAM MELLOWS, the Republican Socialist and leader of the 1916 Rising in Galway - the county which saw the highest level of activity outside Dublin - will be commemorated at a series of events this month.

Galway was, along with Tyrone, Louth, and Wexford, one of the few counties to actually take part in the 1916 Rising, and outside of Dublin, County Galway saw the most significant level of activity.

Galway County Council has major plans to mark the anniversary of the Easter Rising next year. A large crowd gathered at County Hall earlier this week for the launch of the local authority’s 1916 centenary programme. The commemorations encompass a number of themes including remembering, reconciling, presenting, imagining, and celebrating.
