A record 180 women are living in emergency accommodation across Galway and the west, Galway Simon said on the eve of International Women’s Day.

Galway Simon has expressed grave concern as 2024 begins with record numbers of people experiencing homelessness in the West. The latest figures published by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government report a record 630 people staying in Emergency Accommodation in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon in December 2023.

Homelessness charity Galway Simon Community is deeply concerned about the number of children and families experiencing homelessness in the West this winter. The charity has issued an urgent appeal ahead of Christmas, asking people to support them to prevent the trauma of homelessness for families across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

Galway Simon Community is delighted to announce that the Galway Simon Society has been established by students in University of Galway and launched its inaugural fundraiser on campus this week. They are taking part in the Sleep Out for Simon on October 6th, organising their own Sleep Out on campus, in the Quad. They are encouraging their fellow students to join them to Sleep Out and raise both funds and awareness, to ensure that vulnerable people in our community have a safe space to sleep every night, in a home of their own. Professor Pól Ó Dochartaigh, Deputy President and Registrar, University of Galway, is also showing his support by joining Galway Simon at their Shop Street Sleep Out on the 6th of October.
