Some of the best driving advice

I remember back in the day before I ever sat behgnd a wheel, an old relative telling me that to always expect a car to come around any bend I approach. That way, nothing takes you by surprise. It's funny how that has stuck with me over the years, even though it might seem like the bleeding obvious.

Enjoy a rewarding career in counselling

I remember on that first day of the introductory course... fear, excitement, and as our tutor started to speak about ideas in counselling, I felt such resonance, and knew in that moment that I had started on an adventure of a lifetime. Now, over 20 years later, I reflect on the journey, and I'm thrilled to be a therapist, supervisor and trainer, and I still feel the fear and the excitement as I step into the unknown with every client... what a privilege to walk with someone as they step forward into another way.

"It was just fun to be with them and they were great lads and you couldn't ask any more" - is how 25 years on Martin Carney remembers the Mayo u21 team of 1995, that were beaten by Kerry in an All Ireland final replay that summer.

Enter the world of politics by voting

I remember leaving a polling station a few decades ago in my hometown and bumping into a friend who told me that he had just voted for the introduction of divorce on the basis that it would make “loads more wimmen available for the shift”. And boy, was he pleased with himself. Not really bothering to enlighten him to the fact that his vote would also free up more men to compete with his Lothario efforts, I let him off as happy as Larry, having voted for what was probably the most meaningful reason he had ever had.

The price to be paid for mild voyeurism

I remember long ago in the mists of time, being stuck in a marketing class and being told about the power of subliminal advertising. How the ad with the sound of a can of cola being opened was sending a message to the brain to tell us that we wanted to quench our thirst there and then. How the colours in certain global brands stirred some desire in us, a desire undetected until it was pointed out.
