Fianna Fáil regained control of the chamber in Mayo County Council today (Friday, June 6) with the election of Ballinrobe based Cllr Damien Ryan to the position of Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council.

There’s no area in Mayo that can be easily called as to where the seats will be divided out in next week’s local elections, but the new West Mayo area is probably the hardest. The re-drawing of the boundaries last year has seen the old Westport and Belmullet areas thrown together into one giant swathe of land that stretches right from the northern tip of the county right down the west coast to the Galway border. Currently there are eight councillors sitting in the two areas and this time out there are only seven seats up for grabs in the new giant district.

The news that the long awaited Belmullet sewerage scheme has been given €6 million funding was welcomed this week. Local Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle said that while there has been some concern expressed by local residents and fishermen in relation to the location of the proposed plant and outflow pipe, he believes the new modern plant should allay some of these concerns. He said this week: “Belmullet is a modern and vibrant town and it deserves all the investment it can get towards improving its infrastructure so that that it can progress into the future.” Councillor Coyle thanked Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister Michael Ring, and Minister Phil Hogan for their commitment to the project. He said that both himself and Minister Ring had worked tirelessly on behalf of the community to have the scheme delivered.

Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle has welcomed the granting of a foreshore licence and the appointment of consultants for the new sewerage scheme for Belmullet. Although there have been concerns about the location of the new treatment plant and outflow pipe Councillor Coyle believes that the new modern plant should allay some of the concerns expressed. The new scheme will be of great benefit to the town. Cllr Coyle thanked Minister Michael Ring, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, and Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan for their work in progressing the scheme, he also thanked the staff of Mayo County Council.

The hot-button issue of the proposed Grid West 400kV power line development has continued to evolve this week. At Monday’s Mayo County Council meeting, the elected members took the unusual step of adjourning the standing orders of the meeting to let one of the affected members of the community address the meeting in the middle of a debate.
