Footballers need at least a point to secure promotion

After Galway's solid 3-15 to 1-13 victory over Down at Páirc Esler in round six of the league, manager Kevin Walsh said Galway had been in division two for the past six or seven years because they had not been good enough, or consistent enough, to play in the top flight.

Footballers should have enough to lower the Banner on Sunday

Having attended college for five years with plenty of lads from Clare, and having played a few Sigerson and Collingwood cups with a blast of them too with UL, I know one thing for certain, they are sound men. And hard men to beat.

Corofin favourites to beat Killarney Crokes

Club v county, I have seen it from both sides

The age-old debate of club versus county seems to raise its ugly head year after year. For a county like ours with such a prominent senior football team that has been in so many All Ireland finals of late it seems we still cannot get the balance right between club and county. The same problem occurred again this year with a fixture pile up as our county champions and genuine All Ireland contenders Castlebar Mitchels had to play six games, six weeks in a row, eventually losing to now Connacht champions Corofin in extra time having run out of gas during that period of extra time. Some may be wondering what about Westport? They had the same conundrum. They even had to replay a county semifinal against Shrule/Glencorrib mid-week such was the backlog of games. However, Westport were not on the go for a continuous 18 months as the Mitchels were, and Westport had plenty in the tank at the final whistle of all their games.

Mitchels and Corofin to renew their rivalry

This is the one that neutrals and supporters alike have been looking forward to since each side won its respective county title. The sides have met twice in the last three years, with Castlebar Mitchels gaining the upper hand on both of those occasions and going all the way to the All Ireland final. In the year they did not meet, Corofin saw off the best Mayo could offer, made it as far as St Patrick's Day, and brought the Andy Merrigan Cup home for the second time in their history.

Corofin know how tough beating Castlebar will be on Sunday

Corofin senior footballers have been practically untouchable over the last four years in the Galway club championship, and some of their players have never tasted defeat, even once, in the county championship in the four seasons they have played senior football.
