An inspirational evening was had at Galway Community College, Wellpark Road last Thursday as local young musicians taking part in Music Generation Programmes from local youth services such as Foróige picked up electric guitars, keyboards or microphones and drew in their audience. Another special treat came from TUSLA family services staff who strongly supported the young musicians of tomorrow onstage.

Galway Community College (GCC), GRETB welcomed another delegation of Erasmus+ students and teachers from schools in Croatia and Spain, to Galway city this week, for the final mobility of the endangered species and biodiversity project, a climate change research study in the European Union, that all three schools have been working on for the last year.

Career progression available through working in a retail pharmacy

Start working in pharmacy and you can progress up to becoming a pharmacist. First you work as an over the counter assistant, you are trained instore to give advice on medicines bought at the counter, vitamins, and skincare. Next, train as a pharmacy technician doing a two year distance learning technician course while working, gaining experience and applying knowledge as you acquire it. Lastly, you can apply to university as a mature student to study pharmacy. The academic requirement is a Leaving Certificate with chemistry. Experience in pharmacy, ie, working as a pharmacy technician, is an obvious advantage. Universities want the applicants to start and complete courses they begin, and having worked in a pharmacy you will know it is a career fit for you. This experience makes you more attractive to the admissions panel.

For some, these courses may be used as a transition year, an opportunity to sample new vocational areas before committing to a longer course of study in higher education. All GCC's one-year courses offer a mix of blended learning, with work experience and funded Erasmus placements. These courses are aimed at Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied graduates, mature learners, and anyone finding themselves considering changing their career path.
