A documentary chronicling US president John F Kennedy’s momentous visit to Galway in 1963 will feature at upcoming film festivals in Dublin and Cannes.

CÚRAM, the SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices based at University of Galway, together with Galway City Museum has launched a new public exhibition celebrating the collaboration, creativity and innovation in medical technology (medtech) research in Ireland.

Galway City Museum last week hosted an unveiling to mark 50 years since Galway’s own Commander Bill King completed a three-year world circumnavigation in his yacht, the Galway Blazer II.

“It can be a bit of a loner’s business all this doodling” jokes cartoonist Jim Cogan. “We’re just sitting at home in our studios. At least a festival gets us out to look at each other.”

Culture Night kicks off tomorrow night, Friday September 22.

The Misleór Festival of nomadic cultures will run in the city until October 1 with a vibrant programme featuring music, film, poetry, talks and visual art from Traveller, Roma, Sámi, Mongolian, Australian Aboriginal and Romany Gypsy communities.

Once again, the entire city will be positively electric with excitement, with over fifty very special and unique cultural events happening across multiple venues for Culture Night on Friday September 22. Experience entire street transformations, innovative theatre, candlelit concerts and visual arts. Learn new skills including sign language, juggling, origami, boatbuilding and even try your hand at the harmonica! Gain a better understanding of Galway’s growing international communities including Spanish, African and nomadic cultures. Events run all day and into the night in our ‘Culture Night Late’ programme. All activities are available completely free of charge supported by the Arts Council and Galway City Arts Office.

In October 1935, the local papers reported that Mr Thomas Lydon was about to open a super restaurant, installed with the latest conveniences, over his well-known confectionery shop on Shop Street. “A masterpiece of Modernity. Its equipment is the most up-to-date procurable including a Major ‘Esse’ Cooker, Electric Magrini Toaster, Scott Electric Hot Plate, Cold Storage room and a Frigidaire Ice Cream cabinet, The entrance to the restaurant is through the handsome shop premises which have also been modernized and where the aromas of freshly made bread buns and cakes was mouth-watering. The work of the restaurant, which could seat 200 people, is carried on by a well-trained staff of about thirty.”

This year’s Galway Cartoon Festival promises to be the biggest and best yet, with international exhibitions, fascinating talks, public interviews, film screenings, art trails, workshops and competitions taking place around the city from September 29 to October 4.
