The Galway Alliance Against War will hold its annual general meeting on Saturday April 9 at 8pm in Richardson’s, Eyre Square.

With the Christmas market coming to an end in Eyre Square, having attracted tens of thousands of people to the city over the past three weeks, despite the inclement weather, the Galway Advertiser is asking shoppers across the city and county to concentrate their Christmas spend locally to save jobs and to preserve communities.

Saturday, June 29, 1963 may have been dull and overcast, but the city of Galway presented a colourful spectacle amid scenes of unprecedented enthusiasm. There were smiles all round in Eyre Square as a cheque of over €4,000 was presented to the Sunflower Chernobyl Appeal and a number of children from Belarus.

Galway City Council decided this past week to remove a statue memorializing the women who lived, worked and, in some cases, died at the Sisters of Mercy Magdalene laundry in the city. Dedicated in March 2009, the Mick Wilkins statue was commissioned by the same city councilors who now seek to remove it. It is located at the corner of Forster Street and Bothár Breandan O Eithir, standing in full public view close to where the laundry institution once stood.

Rickshaws will be able to continue operating freely on the streets of Galway for the rest of the summer after a proposed new set of bylaws was kicked into touch at Monday’s council meeting.
