Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has told the Dáil that the poor electricity transmission network in Mayo is jeopardising a number major alternative energy projects in the county which are at an advanced stage of planning.

IBEC West, which represents business in the region, has welcomed the significant progress on the Grid West project, following the announcement of a number of potential corridors which can accommodate this new transmission line. The project is a €240 million investment in the west of Ireland’s energy infrastructure and is being developed by EirGrid, the state-owned company responsible for the development and operation of the national electricity transmission system.

A call has been made on local communities and landowners throughout the west of Ireland to support the proposed Grid West upgrading of the region’s electricity system.

EirGrid has announced the commencement of the second round of public consultation on the Grid West project and has also invited the public to attend an open day in their area. The two Mayo open days take place on Tuesday August 28 at Kiltane GAA Club, Bangor Erris, from 1pm to 8pm, and on Tuesday September 4 at the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, from 1pm to 8pm.

A new Grid West information centre has opened on Linenhall Street in Castlebar following the launch of the first phase of public consultation for the €240 million EirGrid project by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD last week. The centre will be open every Monday and Tuesday, 9am to 5pm.

A plan to bring 21st century energy infrastructure to Galway and the West of Ireland was launched by EirGrid this week. By connecting the electricity generated by the region’s huge renewable energy resources, the Grid West project will facilitate significant job creation and investment as well as contributing to national recovery and growth.

More than 250 students travelled to the Linenhall Theatre, Castlebar, last week to attend EirGrid’s inaugural schools’ science programme Understanding Electricity - From Power Station to PlayStation. The show, which was held during Engineers Week, is based on the Junior Certificate science curriculum, with particular emphasis placed on practical experience and audience participation.

The latest phase of EirGrid’s public consultation regarding plans for a new 110 kV electricity circuit to connect the existing Mullingar 110 kV Transmission Station at Irishtown and the existing Kinnegad 110 kV Transmission Station near Kinnegad Co Westmeath, is to commence this week.

EirGrid has moved to allay concerns about its proposed new electricity supply line to Mullingar, saying there are no health or other risks associated with the project.
