In the run-up to World Animal Week, which takes place from October 4-10, Pedigree and Whiskas, along with key Irish animal organisations, have issued results of a survey that show 64 per cent of pet owners find their relationships with their partners, friends, and family more stressful than the bond they enjoy with their pets.

While only 49 of the 170 dogs abandoned in Mayo in 2008 were re-homed, 62 fewer dogs were put down and 32 fewer dogs were abandoned than in 2007. These recent statistics released by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government show the positive effect the annual Pedigree Adoption Drive campaign is having on raising the awareness of dog abandonment in Ireland.

In these times of doom and gloom not every report is bad news. In the past year the number of dogs rehomed and reclaimed from the Carlow - Kilkenny dog shelter has hugely increased.
