Mayo Association Dublin has announced the launch of the inaugural Mayo Association Dublin Schools’ Debating Competition this year for senior cycle students in Mayo, sponsored by MAYO.IE and in association with Bank of Ireland, Mayo.

The junior debating team from St Gerald’s College, Castlebar, are the talk of the town following their win at the recent regional final of Comórtas an Phiarsaigh, the annual competition organized by Gael Linn for second-level schools nationwide. The event took place in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, last week.

I am sure many of you have been looking at and listening to the Leaders Debates on TV. Last week we had the TV3 one among four leaders: An Taoiseach, An Tánaiste, Micheál Martin, and Gerry Adams. Just this week, on Monday night on RTÉ, we had a Leaders Debate among seven.

St Ignatius College’ on Sea Road opened its doors for the first time in 1862. The Jesuits built a residence and a church at the same time and the move proved to be a success for them. Attendances at Mass and ceremonies grew rapidly. The college, however, was more of a challenge. The boys ranged in age from nine to 13 and the subjects taught included mathematics, Latin, Greek, and elocution. The numbers at first were as expected. They grew steadily to 90 in 1865 and reached 110 by 1874, but they began to fall thereafter and were inconsistent from year to year. The number recorded for 1899 was 49. 

In the space of one week, Coláiste Iognáid students demonstrated their prowess in schools debating by winning four prestigious debating prizes.

Two second year pupils from Coláiste Iognáid have just been ranked among the top ten debating teams of their age in the world. On Saturday, 14-year-old ‘Jes’ pupils Daragh McCarthy and Eoghan Finn finished in joint ninth position in the 2011 International Competition for Young Debaters. They defeated more than 300 pupils from around the world in the event which took place in Cambridge.
