Cottage Gardens in the Twenty First Century

What do you think of when you hear the words ‘Cottage Garden?’ Lots of things probably spring to mind – roses rambling round a doorway, tall flowering spires – delphiniums, lupins, hollyhocks – masses of scented things, and above all, a sense of abundance. It’s one of the most popular styles of garden even in the midst of all our twenty -first century technology – possibly, in fact, because of all that twenty first century technology.

Landscape designers are increasingly drawing inspiration from the master designers of bygone eras. This popular throwback to times gone by is replicating itself in our gardens, where cottage gardens and traditional cobbles are making a comeback.

I know that many of you dread this time of year, raking lawns and rockeries, clearing pipes, and sweeping driveways, all in an effort to remove the falling leaves that have lodged there. Falling leaves are, as you know, all part of life’s cycle though. Plants, as with people, slow down at this time of year and shed excess baggage. This is all in preparation for winter, when it is the time to rest. Sound familiar?

The easiest type of gardening for this time of year is what I term armchair gardening. Easy work this might be, but vital nonetheless.
