In September 2004 Seamus Heaney opened the Autumn Gathering in Gort, and he read the above poem (which I will conclude in a moment), and told the audience that he was happy to be once again in south Galway. “ To drive across Ireland, east to west, towards Padraic Fallon’s native Galway, is to experience a double sensation of refreshment and déja-vu. The refreshment comes from the big lift of the sky beyond the River Shannon, the déja-vu from entering a landscape which has been familiar for a century as an image of the dream Ireland invented by the Irish Literary Revival.’

Plenty to do at Coole this Christmas

There is lots to do at Coole Park this month. The park is a wonderful place to take a walk with two waymarked trails to follow. The family trail is less than two kilometres and takes you past the site of the house, into the walled garden and through the woodland. Along the way you can stop to see the small herd of red deer, and try to spot the stag displaying his antlers or look out for signs of red squirrels searching for nuts to eat.

Celebrate spring at Coole this weekend

Coole Park will host two events in the coming days to celebrate the arrival of spring. A family learning day will take place in the park this weekend, and an event celebrating Lady Augusta Gregory’s love of trees will be held the following weekend as part of Tree Week and Seachtain na Gaeilge.
