Members of Castlebar Town Council have called on Mayo County Council to take control of the beaches in Mayo with regard to the provision of lifeguard services, toilet facilities and the drinking of alcohol by members of the public.

The issue of whether a prayer will be said before the meetings of Castlebar Town Council in future was raised at the May meeting of the local authority. The councillors were discussing a number issues to do with protocol recommendations for the council. Cllr Frank Durcan proposed that before a meeting the members should say an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be to the Father. Cllr Eugene McCormack told the meeting that “maybe that is one too many” to which Cllr Durcan agreed that either the Hail Mary or the Our Father be said.

Inspector Martin Byrne told a meeting of the Castlebar Joint Policing Committee this week that he would endeavour to get the gardaí in the town to carry out more enforcement on litter offences. The members of the committee were given a presentation at the meeting by Sharon Cameron, the environmental awareness officer from Mayo County Council, on the issue of litter and enforcement in the county.

Councillors support anti bailout rally

The members of Castlebar Town Council gave their backing to an emergency motion introduced by Labour councillor Harry Barrett for the holding of an anti bank bailout rally to be held on The Mall in the town. Cllr Barrett’s motion called on Castlebar Town Council to “facilitate the holding of a public rally on the Mall at a date to be decided to allow the citizens of this town to express their outrage at the disgraceful fallout from the banking crisis that has involved the doubling of the national debt and the wasting of tax payers’ money on Anglo Irish Bank and the Irish Nationwide”.
