The countdown is on to the Enable Ireland No Limits Gym Challenge. This is the inaugural All Ireland Gym Challenge, where teams of four spend 10 minutes each on the bike, crosstrainer, rower and treadmill, in order to record the furthest distance travelled and qualify for the All Ireland final in City West Hotel, Dublin on October 19. There are nine regional heats in total and the Galway heat takes place in NUIG Kingfisher Gym this Saturday, September 13. To register, teams must raise a minimum of €200.

Mayo girls go for European glory

Mayo’s talented young boxers will be out in force in European competition over the next five weeks. Mayo will have six boxers participating in the Women’s European Union Senior and Youth Championships in Keszthely, Hungary, next month. Seven time national champion Jacqui Lynch (Golden Gloves BC) will be in action in the championships. Lynch won double National titles this season and is having a fantastic season. The Belmullet boxer won the National title and two weeks later was victorious in the Girl 15, (48 kg) division.

Westmeath students dazzle in an array of ‘junk kouture’ at regional final

It was a full house at the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone recently for the Western Regional Final of the ERP Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion Competition which saw the top 80 entries from the west take to the catwalk in their self-made creations. The competition, which is in its second year, challenges second level students to rework trash and other recycled materials into remarkable high-end couture fashion. Milliner Rachel Feeley, visual artist Ann Eingfield, dressmaker and designer Terry McGann, and head of corporate communications at ERP Ireland Yvonne Holmes judged on the night and were blown away by the standard and variety on show.

The nominees for the 2010 Opel GPA Hurling Team of the Year were announced earlier in the week by the Gaelic Players Association. It was a fabulous night for the Kilkenny hurlers on Friday last as they dominated the All Stars, picking up nine awards for the team selection and the tenth award - ‘Player of the Year’ going to the deserving Eoin Larkin. Speaking to Eoin after the banquet he told me he was absolutely thrilled with the award, and was delighted that all his hard work and dedication had helped.
