TG4 HAS had a great few years. It was recently announced as the sixth most watched channel in Ireland, putting the Connemara based station ahead of BBC 2 and Channel 4. I decided to try and just watch TG4 for the week and see how I got on.

A new film festival – Science on Screen Film Festival Ireland – runs from this Thursday November 5 to Sunday November 8. Empowering and inspiring European citizens to become citizens of the sea is one of the key goals of the European Commission’s forthcoming Mission for Healthy Oceans, Seas, Coastal and Inland Waters. The Marine Institute and the European Commission are inviting the people of Ireland to complete an online survey on their level of awareness about our oceans and seas, and share what they believe are the top priorities for the health of our ocean.

Renowned Roscommon flute player, Patsy Hanly, hosts an evening of “socially-distanced” music and stories at Roscommon Arts Centre with his guests John Carty and seanachai Vincent Pierse, on Thursday, August 28.

Dr Emer McGrath of NUI Galway has been awarded a clinician scientist fellowship as part of the Health Research Board (HRB) €3.7 million investment in 12 new health research fellowships. Dr McGrath was awarded €655,524 for her research into blood-based biomarkers for early detection of preclinical neurocognitive disorders.

 The primary purpose of the network is to formalise a system for sharing information, strategies and culture amongst festivals that will represent a strong voice in Europe. It will shape, develop, reach and agree on common positions and perspectives on key issues. The network will be able to develop resources, business models, best practices and information exchange infrastructures to support members in the emerging film ecosystem, providing a unique opportunity to strengthen film festivals.

FOLLOWING THE Government announcement that cinemas will remain closed until August 10, and large gatherings will not be permitted for some time, the Galway Film Fleadh has decided to move its 2020 festival online.
