St Joseph's secondary school in Castlebar will be celebrating the school's centenary next month, with a weekend of events to mark the 100 years of the school set to take place over Saturday October 27 and Sunday October 28.

Anne Conlon is new Network Ireland Mayo branch president

Network Ireland, Mayo Branch has announced the election of Anne Conlon as its new president for 2018. The election took place at the recent AGM. Ms Conlon, who is managing director of Castlebar-based Conlon Training since its establishment in 2010, was delighted to accept the nomination. As part of this role Ms Conlon is on the national executive, a role she took up in 2017 as vice president of Network Mayo. She was also appointed to the national sponsorship group in 2017, which is responsible for the funding of all 15 Networks in Ireland.

Byrne wins Carra Classic - Diver runs PB in Japan

On Sunday the Carra Classic 8k was won by John Byrne (Mayo AC) in 27:29 - the first woman home was Kathy Gleeson (Claremorris) in 30:56. The Carra Classic is part of the Great Lakes series of spring races and 160 competitors made it to the finish line.

Caroline Cresham and friends to play fundraising concert next week

A musical concert taking place in Breaffy House Hotel on Thursday October 13 at 8pm will feature Caroline Cresham with musical support from Rebecca Cresham, Mick Mulhearn, Mick Holster, Mick Buckton, Tom Lyons, Stephen Doherty, Pat Coyne, Sarah Lyons and Richie Heneghan. The concert will also feature performance by Tina Browne, a student at St Anthony’s School.

The Longest Day is a challenge like no other

The Longest Day Challenge will take place on June 18, starting and finishing at Breaffy House Hotel by a group fundraising for the Irish Cancer Society. This is a non-competitive challenge event where a local group has taken on the challenge to cycle to and climb the three mountains of Mayo – Mweelrea 815M, Nephin 805M and Croagh Patrick 765M. The cycle distance is approximately 150kms between the three peaks and they hope to finish this in just under 14 hours. The group intend to start their Longest Day Challenge at 5.30am and return to Breaffy House Hotel, before the Mayo and Galway Connacht Championship match finishes that evening.
