Castlebar’s festive bling in numbers

The elaborate festive lights display on The Mall, Castlebar, has generated plenty of buzz this year from shoppers, visitors, and locals alike.

All that glitters

In 2001, Mariah Carey was in an awful film called Glitter. Now, thankfully, the must-have party trend for this year (of glitter and all things sparkly), is a lot better than the film, which I believe was not exactly a success at the box office. Adding a hint of shine here and there to your outfit will never be easier as the high street shops and boutiques embrace this look with open arms, and let’s be honest, our eyes tend to be drawn to something shiny. Taking inspiration from a floor length Dolce and Gabbana dress, sequins are really flattering to wear, shorts and minis are the key statement piece and naturally shoes and accessories are where we can have a little fun.

It’s vintage dahhhhling..

The last couple of years have seen an upsurge in the popularity of vintage fashion in Ireland. The retro look has reclaimed its spot in the trendy charts thanks to a celeb following including (but not limited to) Alexa Chung and the Olsen twins. But we need to clarify something here. Just because it is old or second hand, does not make it vintage. In a lot of ways it’s an abused term. Whether it is clothing or jewellery, we are unofficially allowed to bestow the term on pieces which are of high quality and are covetable i.e., I own several vintage scarves which I have been collecting over many years from Hermés, Chanel and Gucci (pictured, Gucci scarf from my collection). And no they are not for sale.

No bling - just hip hop brilliance from Dälek

LET’S BE honest, hip hop has gone stale these last couple of years...very stale. With the return of indie guitar bands, hip hop has retreated to the margins in a mind numbing orgy of bling and clichéd beats.
