The fourth annual Kilmovee 10k Road Race and Walk takes place on Easter Saturday, March 30 starting at 1pm. This popular event attracted over 400 runners, joggers, and walkers last year. It has an AAI permit issued through Mayo AC and is organised by Kilmovee Shamrocks GAA Club. It is a joint fundraiser with Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and Kilmovee Shamrocks. The hospice is the main beneficiary - with €19,000 raised for them in the past three years. This is the first big road race in Mayo this year. Bidwell leads Barrett and Devanney home in Balla 8K

Even without a couple of the hills at the start of the traditional 10k course, the Balla 8k proved to be a stern test. After a fast downhill start, the field hit a wall of reality as they headed up over the railway bridge in the first kilometre. Winner Matt Bidwell led Roger Barrett all the way to the finish, but could never really relax as Roger maintained the pressure just seconds behind. Sean Gallagher and Anto Devanney had their own battle for third until Anto went to the front in the closing stages.

The one-lap course had frequent splash-through pools and roadside streams over the first 8k and then two tough hills made it a demanding finish over the final 2k. Mark Doyle (Runworx) was first across the line in 35.04. Performance of the day was by women's race winner Sarah Syron (Mayo AC), whose gritty finish enabled her to win by nine seconds in 40.56.
