Top two clash in Saturday showdown

The Elverys Sports Super League will hit its penultimate game ahead of the midway mark on Saturday evening and there is only one place any soccer fan should be tomorrow evening, that is Belleek Park in Ballina where the league leaders Ballina Town will host second placed Ballyheane. The home side picked up their fifth win from five league games last weekend when they scored two goals in the final half hour to see off Manulla in Carramore. Ballina were made to work hard for the win, with Manulla succeeding in stifling their attempts until the 63rd minute when Ben McGarry struck and Eugene Gorman made the points safe with their second goal 12 minutes later. Ballyheane, like their opponents, have yet to taste defeat in the league this season, and picked up their second win so far to go with their three draws already in the bank with a five-goal destruction of Claremorris in Ballyheane last Sunday. Ballyheane were three goals to the good by the break with Arek Tobiaz putting the ball in the back of the Claremorris net three times inside the opening 35 minutes. Ballyheane rounded off their win with two goals in the final 20 minutes from substitutes Terry Maughan and Nobert Karo to round off another impressive performance for Ballyheane.

Is the race for the Elverys Sports Super League over already? With four games gone from 14 for six of the eight sides, Ballina Town have found themselves six points clear at the top of the table with four wins from four. Packed neatly behind them on six points are three sides, Ballyheane, Manulla, and Snugboro United, with Castlebar Celtic and Westport United tied together on four points in fifth and sixth places. Claremorris and Iorras Aontaithe make up the bottom two, with Claremorris just one point behind the two flagship names of Mayo soccer, and Iorras Aontaithe who have only played three points have just a point to show for their efforts so far.

While most eyes last weekend were on Westport United’s big game in Lecarrow in the Connacht Junior Cup, there were still three rounds of games in the Elverys Sports Super League. Ballina Town made it three wins from three with a 7-2 win over Claremorris at home. That is 19 goals scored in three games by the north Mayo men, who are laying down a serious assault on this year’s title. Their goals came from a David O’Mahony hat-trick with Barry Higgins, Daniel Gorman, Pat Duffy, and Ben McGarry all chipping in with goals.
