Soccer: Mayo League United look to keep their noses in front

image preview

The home straight of the Mayo League Super League season is coming into view for the 10 sides in the top division. With five rounds of action left, the defending champions Westport United are sitting top of the table just one point clear of challengers Manulla. On Saturday evening a full round of fixtures is down for decision in the top division.

Manulla still lead the way as season passes half way point

Last weekend's round of action in the Elverys Sports Super League saw the top division reach the half way point with Manulla still holding on to their lead at the top of the table, they sit two points in front of Westport United, with both Castlebar Celtic and Straide and Foxford United three points further back, making for what looks to be an exciting second half at the top of the table. At the bottom of the table there are three sides separated by just three points, with Achill Rovers, Ballyheane, and Glenhest all battling it out to avoid the drop at this stage, but a run of form from any of those sides could see those placed above the bottom three dragged into the dogfight at the bottom.

Cup action takes centre stage this weekend

The Connacht Gold Super and Premier cups get moving this weekend, with 16 games in both competitions down for decision over Saturday and Sunday. In the Super Cup there are just two all division ties with the meeting of Super League sides Manulla and Ballyglass in Carramore, and Claremorris and Westport United two of the stand-out ties of the round.

Straide and Foxford look to stay top of the table

League leaders Straide and Foxford United will look to keep their place at the top of the Super League this weekend when they make the trip to Glenhest Rovers. Last weekend, the men from Green Road had a 3-1 win against fellow newly promoted side Achill Rovers at home. United hit their visitors hard in the first half and went in leading 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Kevin Langdon, Conor Sherry and John Durkan. A Kevin McGinty goal in the second half cut the gap back to two, but the home side were able to hold on for their fourth win of the season.

Back to league action after cup distractions

Last weekend all eyes were on the divisional cup competitions with the Westaro Cup taking centre stage for the top flight clubs. League champions Westport United needed a penalty shootout to progress as Claremorris after the game finished 3-3 after extra time. Colm Keane struck two first half goals from free-kicks, with Andrew Peters and Matthew Peters both finding the net for Claremorris before half time in this entertaining encounter. Westport went in front for the third time not long before the full time time whistle, thanks to a Adam Mulchrone goal, but Oisin Brady leveLled it up again right on full time to send the game to extra time. No one could find the net in the additional periods and Westport emerged winners 5-3 on penalties.

Early pace setters meet on Sunday

When the season was about to kick-off, you would have got pretty good odds on Straide and Foxford United leading the league table after the first few rounds of games, but that is exactly where they are right now, with seven points from their opening three games. You would have also probably got as long odds that the two sides who battled it out for the title last year would be in the bottom two, but once again that is what we have so far with Ballina Town propping up the table and Westport United just ahead of them.

Early season clashes could have implications down the line

A full round of fixtures in the Mayo League Super League is pencilled in for this weekend, with two games down for tomorrow night and three more on Sunday afternoon. Both Ballyglass and Achill will be contesting their third games in the division, with six others their second game, while both Claremorris and defending champions Westport United will get their league boots dirty for the first time this season.
