Farewell to 2016 – and welcome 2017

I hope you have survived Christmas. As I write this, it is December 28, so life is beginning to come back to normal, trains and buses are running, shops are open, people are reading newspapers, and the madness is over. Except, of course, for children, who are having an absolutely wonderful time.

Sadness and grief — reality and joy!

You know, I do not know how to begin or what to say to you at the start of my column this week. We all know the terrible heartbreak of the story of the five people in Ballyjamesduff in County Cavan. Yet every time I read it or talk about it to anyone I find the tears coming into my eyes. It is so sad for every one of them - such a tragic horror story.

Rio – Mayo – Tralee and more besides!

Well, where to begin under the above heading? Let’s begin with Rio where all of the excitement, not just of the Games but of all the other attendant investigations, has been going on.

Summer moves on and the Games are here!

It is August now and already in Dunnes Stores and other supermarkets I see the jotters, copybooks, pencils, and schoolbags all being laid out for display and purchase. I imagine if I was a child in primary school and going around with my mother shopping, I would hate those counters and I would be dragging her away from them, because of course it means that going back to school is not that far off.
