The lighthouse that was not – Old Head 1797

The lighthouse known as the Tower of Lloyd was commissioned in 1791 by Thomas Taylor, 1st Earl of Bective, in memory of his father. Henry Aaron Baker designed it. The 'lighthouse' is located on the Commons of Lloyd near Kells in County Meath, some 40km from the coast, and as such is redundant as a lighthouse. It was, however, used in the nineteenth century by the aristocracy for viewing the local hunt. The Tower of Lloyd is, in fact, an eighteenth-century folly.

Hundreds attend Achill meeting on potential emergency accommodation centre

More than 200 people attended a public meeting in Achill on Wednesday night after it emerged that an emergency accommodation centre might be opened in The Achill Head Hotel at Pollagh. Geraghty Charters has commenced new boat trips in the Erris and Achill regions this week offering a unique way to explore this corner of the Wild Atlantic Way in northwest Mayo. Every Friday from July 8, the Nóirín Bán will depart Blacksod (An Fód Dubh) at 10.30am and arrive in Doogort (Dumha Goirt), Achill Island before 11am. This boat trip allows visitors and locals to explore lovely Achill Island by foot, bike, or even pony and trap. (The road distance from Blacksod to Doogort is almost 100km and can take 1.5 hours to drive.)
