Call to remove working barriers for people with disabilities

People with disabilities in Galway face challenges and barriers to finding, securing, and retaining jobs, according to the Irish Association of Supported Employment which is calling on more to be done in the working world to ensure the promotion of more inclusive employment practices.

Saturday December 3 was the UN International Day of Persons with Disability. We marked it in Galway by holding what we called a ‘Speakout,’ at one o’clock outside Brown Thomas’s, where the Christmas shopping crowds were thickest. Ten of us, men and women in wheelchairs, all ages from late twenties to over eighty, spoke in turn about the need to combat our social exclusion in the city, letting the public know the everyday obstacles we face to our mobility and ease of access.

Disability excellence award for Ballina Civic Offices

The Mayo County Council received an award last week from the National Disability Authority (NDA) that recognises the excellence level of achievement reached by Ballina Civic Offices in integrating accessibility into the provision of services to the public. The Excellence through Accessibility (EtA) Awards were held at the Department of Education and Skills in Dublin. The integration of accessibility into the design and provision of services enables people with disabilities access to public services with ease.

Accessible venue needed for Castlebar Town Council meetings - Ruane

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the opportunity for disability groups to address members of Castlebar Town Council prior to the November monthly meeting. A special meeting took place last night Thursday November 12 to facilitate representatives of People with Disabilities in Ireland and the Castlebar Community Drop-in Group to address the council. The venue for the meeting was changed to Áras an Chontae as the council chamber in Marsh House is not accessible to people with disabilities.
