Community Games Festival in Athlone draws to a close

Athlone welcomed over 20,000 visitors over two weekends as the 2015 HSE Community Games Festival concluded at the weekend. Thousands of children took part in the much-loved sporting and cultural event and the town as a whole benefited immensely.

Track and field dominated the programme of events for the second weekend but drama, singing, and music events were as popular as ever.  The projects this year were outstanding and were of the highest standard to date with Lakeside in Wicklow taking home the overall prize with their thought-provoking take on the theme ‘When my Grandparents were young’.

Speaking at the event, president of the HSE Community Games Gerard Davenport, said:

“We are delighted with the turnout this weekend. We are hoping that next year we’ll have an even bigger attendance as people start to realise it’s easy for everyone to become a part of HSE Community Games!”

This year HSE Community Games once again teamed up with Healthy Ireland, with an emphasis on healthy eating, as Athlone IT served up only healthy options for resident children.

PR director Bernie Brennan said: “It’s not about winning – it’s about making memories and making friends so that children all over Ireland can be proud of what they can achieve through keeping active: whether it be in art, debating, skittles, chess or the 100 metres – there is something in every category and age group which is the essence of Community Games – inclusivity!”

HSE Community Games has long attracted volunteers from all walks of life. Every year, more than 10,000 volunteers donate their time and energy to the 200,000 children who take part.
