New dog fouling awareness campaign piloted in Monksland

A new dog fouling awareness campaign was recently launched in Monksland.

This campaign, in conjunction with Roscommon County Council, is being piloted in the Monksland area because of the high number of complaints received by the council regarding dog fouling on footpaths and green areas.

The programme includes anti-dog fouling audio devices which have been put in place which periodically broadcast the message: “Keep Monksland clean - please clean up after you dog, bag it, and bin it or risk a €150 litter fine”.

Along with the audio a number of special dog fouling bins have been put in place in the area. Members of the public are being asked to bring a bag with them when walking their dog and to use the new doggy bins. Temporary stencils carrying anti-dog fouling messages are also on footpaths.

Monksland Tidy Towns regularly organise clean-up campaigns and dog fouling is one of the most common and offensive types of litter they encounter. Members of the group will be working with Roscommon County Council to bring awareness to dog owners of the risks associated with dog fouling.

As part of this campaign doggy bags will be available in the local county council office in Athlone, and Monksland Tidy Towns will also distribute bags to dog walkers.
