Mullingar Lions Club stepping out for mental health

Mullingar Lions Club is showing its dedication to mental health by launching three separate community initiatives. The club has taken a three-pronged approach to furthering its commitment to improving the understanding of mental health in the community.

The first was hosting a free public event on guiding teenagers and young adults to take control of their own emotional journey to achieving good mental health and wellbeing. An audience of over 200 parents, staff, and other interested members of the community attended the public talk held in the Greville Arms Hotel. The guest speaker was Kieran Lally, the first Mayo person to climb Mount Everest, who spoke on positive mental health, resilience, teamwork, preparation, and motivation.

The second was the presentation of a set of Wellness Information Boards to each of the nine secondary schools in Mullingar and greater area. The boards feature practical tips for mental health and details of organisations which support and provide guidance on mental, physical, and social health.

The third is the club’s initiative to promote the link between good mental health and regular exercise. The ‘Get Me Started’ activity based on Gerry Duffy’s programme encourages people to walk, jog, or run ‘from zero to 30’ through an eight-week schedule.

On bank holiday Monday, May 5, Mullingar Lions Club will be hosting their annual fundraising 40k and 80k cycle, while on Saturday May 10 all participants in the ‘Get Me Started’ activity are invited to take part in a fun 5k walk, jog, or run in Belvedere.
