€460k funding for Killucan community centre

Just under half a million euros in funding has been approved for the construction of a community centre in Killucan.

Westmeath Commmunity Development has approved the allocation of €461,809 towards the community centre, under the Rural Development Programme.

The funding was announced yesterday, Thursday, by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan.

Cllr Denis Leonard welcomed the funding, saying he was delighted to see a service which is so widely used being recognised and rewarded.

“The community centre in Killucan is used by people from a wide-ranging rural area, from Rathwire-Killucan to Raharny and surrounding areas. It is used by young and old, for FETAC and childcare courses, Active Age club, public meetings, and lots more. It is great to see a service that is so widely in use being recognised. This will enhance what is already there; it is the heart of the rural community,” said Cllr Leonard.

Deputy Nicky McFadden said she was “delighted that this project has been given the go-ahead”.

“The community centre will be a great addition to Killucan and surrounding areas and will improve the social activities available for everyone in the community,” she said.

The funding for Killucan is part of the LEADER element of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013, which has a budget of €4.9 billion over a seven-year period.

The project will now go back to the board of Westmeath Community Development for the final approval on the project, which has a total cost of €653,544.
