Mullingar-Tyrellspass road to close for a month

A stretch of the N52 south of Mullingar between Belvedere and Tyrellspass is to be closed for a month from Monday (November 5 ), the county council annnounced this week.

This is to facilitate road works to be completed at two points - Carrick Bridge and Clonfad - on a 5.6km (3.5 mile ) stretch of the main Limerick-Dundalk road as part of the ongoing improvement of this particularly dangerous route.

The council has a full set of diversions set up for traffic wishing to access Kilbeggan (via Ballinea, Dysart, Castletown Geogheghan ), Tyrellspass, and Rochfortbridge (via Lynn, Gaybrook ) throughout this period.

There will also be local access to Dalystown, between the two sites, via Rochfortbridge, and the council apologises for any inconvenience caused.

This work will complete the €22m re-alignment of this stretch of the road, a project that has been on the agenda of Westmeath County Council for at least 14 years.

On the other side of town, the Rathconnell-Macetown stretch of the N52, which was 25 years on the drawing board, will see “a substantial completion by the end of November, and will be fully opened before the end of December”.

A comprehensive map of the detours and attendant signage is available on the ccouncil’s website
