Judge tells man to apologise to public

Judge John Neilan told the Mullingar man charged with a public order offence that the people of the town needed to be apologised to, before making an order excluding him from all licensed premises in his district for the next 12 months, at the local court last week.

Mark Hoey, (23 ), 39 Grange Village, was fined €100 when he pleaded guilty to being intoxicated at Market Square, Mullingar, on April 13. A charge of using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace on the same occasion was struck out by the court.

Inspector Jarlath Folan told the court that the defendant was observed outside Spin Niteclub in Mount Street at 1am on that date in an extremely intoxicated state. He had previous convictions for public order offences.

Ms Patricia Cronin, solicitor, said her client, who has a one year-old daughter, had been working in a hotel. He is now training to be a chef in Cathal Brugha Street. Her client called the Garda station the next day to apologise.
