Feuding family five charged for Willow Park sword attack

Two family members arrested on Friday afternoon (June 5 ) for their part in a feud-related sword and slash-hook attack on a neighbour's house in Willow Park during which a woman broke her arm, were remanded in custody until June 24 at the District Court this week (June 10 ).

Before this, however, both father, Larry Power (39 ) and son, John (19 ), both of 34, Alverno Drive, Willow Park will have to appear at Mullingar Circuit Court, sitting in Tullamore, on Monday (June 16 ) for a hearing in relation to a similar attack in 2007 during which a petrol bomb was allegedly used.

Power's wife Angela (38 ) and a juvenile were remanded on continuing bail until July 15 for their involvement in the same affair.

A fifth participant, John Collins (19 ) with an address in Parlickstown Gardens, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, was given a €500 bail until July 15 also, on condition he observed a 10pm til 6am curfew at the above address and stayed out of Westmeath until his next court appearance.

Seemingly undeterred by his incarceration, Power junior continued making threatening gestures towards the injured woman from the dock during subsequent hearings until escorted to his place of detention by gardai and prison staff.

Garda sources believe the alleged attack might have been a misguided form of vigilantism, as the injured party had previously been in a relationship with a man convicted of drug dealing, though is no longer connected with him.

All five defendants were arrested at around 2pm close to the scene of the incident and brought before a special sitting of the District Court two hours later where they were remanded in custody until their appearance on Wednesday.

The council's housing section is believed to be keeping a close eye on proceedings.
