Mayo start to climb the mountain once again

The shadow boxing and experimenting has come to a close, with the end of the FBD League last Sunday for Mayo. This weekend Mayo will make the trip to Clones in the reverse fixture of last year's National Football League opener which was won by the Farney county men in MacHale Park. The top division in the National Football League is a high intensity environment — Mayo want to hit the ground running and they will be targeting a win in this game.

Ladies and hurlers get their league seasons under way this weekend

This weekend sees both the Mayo senior ladies footballers and senior hurling teams get their league seasons under way. Both sides are under new management this year, with Peter Leahy taking up the top job with the ladies' football side from Frank Browne after the Wexford native stepped down from the role, following Mayo's loss in the All Ireland final to Dublin last year.

Mayo head north as FBD League comes to an end

Mayo's interest in the latter stages of the FBD League came to an end last Sunday when Roscommon ran out three point winners over Mayo in Hyde Park - winding up a run a hectic series of games for Mayo when they faced Leitrim, Galway, and Roscommon in a five day run. Speaking after the game on Sunday, Mayo manager Stephen Rochford felt the tight run of games did catch up with his side at the end: "Ahh…. well three games in five days will always catch up with you, especially at this time of year. But look, Roscommon were worthy winners and it’s disappointing that we didn’t stretch on in that final quarter and narrow the gap and to ask questions."

The Blue Devils look to take down the cream of the cats

Another historic day for Lahardane beckons

In a season of firsts the men from the shadow of Nephin, are looking to create another first on Saturday - when they play for a place in the All Ireland Club Championship junior final. Lahardane have gone from outsiders for the junior championship in Mayo to, not only Mayo, but Connacht junior champions in the space of a brilliant few months last summer. Now they are just an hour away from Croke Park and a tilt at something that will never be forgotten.

Robbie Hennelly’s injury time penalty save from Ciaran Murtagh was the last act in Mayo’s five day trilogy of games in the FBD League as Kevin McStay’s side ran out three point winners in a bitterly cold Hyde Park - as for the second time in three days, Mayo failed to take advantage of their opponents having a man sent off.

Mayo fall to Galway’s 12 apostles in biblical conditions

Despite playing with two extra men for the last 12 minutes of normal time after both Damien Comer and Sean Mulkerrin had been sent to the line, the former for straight red and the latter for a black card having already be booked - Mayo were unable to see off the challenge of Kevin Walsh’s Galway at home, going down by a point and not scoring for over 34 minutes in the second half including injury time.

It looked that Mayo were going to get off to a winning start until Leitrim’s Brendan Gallagher punched the ball past Paddy O’Malley from close range deep into injury time to secure a draw in this FBD League encounter in front of 1,696 paying spectators in MacHale Park.
