Since Director’s irresistible bid for notice on the Dublin rock circuit was launched in 2005, they have crafted intelligent guitar music that has set them apart from the usual suspects. The band’s genesis saw three Malahide college entrants, guitarist Aherne, bassist Averill, and front man Moloney, playing together, with a few songs already starting to form. They began to take the operation seriously, assuming roles and casting around for a drummer to complete the outfit. Moloney, while studying for his degree in music, made the acquaintance of just such a drummer, classmate Lawlor, whose interests were in harmony with those of the group. Director was complete. A year later, after an arresting sequence of live shows amid growing popularity, Director recorded their debut record, We Thrive On Big Cities, for Atlantic Records.
Their first volley of live shows could not fail to win converts. The sheer speed with which they commanded major-label attention was no fluke. They meant business from the very beginning. Since then their story has been anything but ordinary. We Thrive On Big Cities, which included the hit single ‘Reconnect’, brought Director widespread success in Ireland (well over platinum status sales and a chart presence for 28 weeks after debuting at number two in the album charts). Director played to packed-out venues across Ireland, and commanded large crowds at their Oxegen festival appearances. Accolades were forthcoming as they won a Meteor award in 2007 while We Thrive On Big Cities picked up a nomination for the coveted Choice Music Prize.
After its 22 week sell-out Dublin season and sell-out Irish tour in 2007/8 this smash hit show Menopause the Musical is back in Mayo for its final Irish dates.
With a script packed full of memorable one-liners backed by an instantly recognisable soundtrack of 25 parodied versions of ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s pop classics, the hilarious and uplifting Menopause the Musical is heading to The Royal Theatre.
They have performed with Sharon Shannon, De Dannan, and Altan and now the hugely popular and talented Cunningham family from Connemara are set to take centre stage themselves at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on March 7, with a spectacular new music and dance show called Fuaim Chonamara (The Sound of Connemara). Fuaim Chonamara boasts a wealth of talented musicians and dancers from all over the west of Ireland. Brian Ó Cuinneagáin headlines the show direct from his US tour with Teada and Seamus Begley. He will be joined on stage by his sisters Irene, Ashling, and Lorraine, while his younger brother Michael also features as a dancer and musician.
“We’re really looking forward to our first nation-wide tour. We have a really special line-up planned for Castlebar with lots of lively music, mesmerising dances, wonderful singing, and even a few surprises,” said show producer Brian Ó Cuinneagáin. “There is something for everyone in this show.”
