Mayo locked out of big energy profits - says Barrett

Mon, Mar 20, 2023

"As you pay your next ESB bill, keep in mind that Mayo's biggest export is energy. Energy profits here are huge. However, the people of Mayo have been locked out of proper benefit from this Gold Rush in energy profits."

This is according to former Independent councillor, Harry Barrett, who adds: "Unlike other areas around Europe hosting wind farms, Mayo people do not get a reduction in their energy bills, they do not get a chance to invest in local wind operations, and the small amount of community benefit given, is not linked at all to the profits generated by the gas or wind operator.

National Liming Programme now open - Ring

Thu, Mar 16, 2023

Mayo TD Michael Ring has welcomed the announcement from the Department of Agriculture of the opening of the €8 million National Liming Programme, stating that under the scheme, farmers can avail of a €16/tonne subvention to support the spreading of lime and applications can be made up to 20th April 2023.

Deputy Ring added: “The Government recognises that soil fertility is the foundation of a profitable and sustainable farm. As part of the Government’s response to the price increases in input costs, the National Liming Programme will help offset part of the expense of using lime. Lime is an important component of achieving balanced soil health, improving nutrient use efficiency and thereby reducing the requirements of chemical fertilisers and contributing to both climate and water targets. By having a balanced soil pH, we will reduce the need for artificial fertilisers which is good for the environment and good for the farmer’s pocket.”
