Councillors say tourists prefer Ballina over Westport

With Ballina riding high as it reaches the half way point of its 300th year celebrations, following a succession of events including the annual festival on the Moy, the Connacht Fleadh, the Mini Marathon, not to mention the visit by US President Joe Biden - and now this week - further celebrations following a series of Grade A marks in an assessment of the town by Irish Business Against Litter, Ballina has become the place to be for tourists in Mayo - according to local councillors.

Mayo TD on the frontline in RTE/Tubridy hearing

Almost 500 Mayo homes saved from bulk sale

Planning measures introduced two years ago to increase home ownership and restrict the practice of the bulk purchasing of homes show that 486 homes in Mayo received planning permission with conditions restricting bulk buying or multiple sales to a single purchaser, in the two-year period between May 2021 and May 2023, with the number of homes in Mayo recorded in May 2023 significantly increasing from zero units recorded in May 2022.

Dillon seeks funding to mark 1978 Rebellion

Mayo Fine Gael TD, Alan Dillon, has called upon Minister Catherine Martin and her Department for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media to assign funds to memorialize the 225th year since General Humbert and his French army landed in Killala, Ballina, and Castlebar in August 1978.

Deputy Dillon said: "Upon engaging with Minister Catherine Martin’s Department, officials are currently reviewing potential ways they could assist and appropriately back plans to observe the anniversary in Mayo, considering the Department's dedication to commemorative activities and the available budgetary resources.

Taoiseach says medical card dental services increased in Mayo

The matter of medical card patients in Mayo being unable to access dental services in the county was raised in the Dail on Wednesday of this week by Mayo TD Alan Dillon, who told Taoiseach Leo Varadkar during Questions to An Taoiseach: "There is a staggering average in the county of over 5,500 patients per dentist awaiting treatment under the DTSS. Dentists are overwhelmed, patients are travelling abroad, and this is all a serious concern for medical card holders in Mayo."

Poachers fined for illegal salmon capture off Mayo
