Ring calls for more community wardens at schools

The Fine Gael spokesperson on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Michael Ring, has learned that local authorities can now introduce community wardens outside schools following the success of a pilot scheme. He had sought an update on the pilot scheme commitment as included in the Programme for Government.

Daithi O Sé to judge Ladies’ Day at the Ballinrobe Races

Ballinrobe Racecourse is calling on the ladies of County Mayo to get their hats on and race cards ready for the Ballinrobe Races, which take place on Monday August 11. TV presenter Daithi O Sé, who has just wrapped up filming on TG4’s Highway 61, will be on hand to judge the Best Dressed Lady Competition and will have his binoculars polished to scout out the most eye-catching outfits.

Rise in number of District Court cases heard in Mayo last year

According to the 2007 Courts Service Report, which examined statistics from the Castlebar and Ballina District Court Offices, 3,623 public order, drugs, larceny, sexual offences and road traffic cases were brought before the district courts in Mayo—13 more cases than in 2006.

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has warned of the dangerous traffic conditions being presented by some users of Rush Street in Castlebar. Over the past few weeks, a greater number of drivers are ignoring the one-way system that is in place on the street, he has observed. As a result, cars are driving directly through the traffic light junction between Linenhall Street and Lucan Street.

Mayo is tops for selling home items on eBay

eBay.ie has declared Mayo a category winner in its very own All Ireland 2008 Championship. This championship is held annually across the island and looks at who is buying and selling what on eBay.ie. Carlow were crowned overall winners for 2008.

Mayo emerged victorious as the winner in the home category. Mayo locals sold more items for the home than any other county in Ireland, with Waterford in second place and Meath in third.

NUI Galway PhD student Ruairi Nestor, from Ballyglass, Co Mayo, has won a prestigious international award at a conference in Lausanne, Switzerland. Ruairi received the Libersky Prize for the best research paper by a student at the 2008 SPHERIC International Workshop, for his work in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Call for telemedicine facilities for island communities

A Dáil Deputy has sought an update on the provision of telemedicine facilities for island communities as outlined in the Programme for Government. The Fine Gael spokesperson on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Michael Ring, said the proposal was to provide telemedicine facilities to allow Ireland's most remote island communities and medical practitioners access to doctors and consultants in specialist hospitals.
