First part of local authority funding for IWAK to be paid over

The first portion of the €7.3 million investment by seven local authorities from the region into Ireland West Airport Knock as part of a proposal spearheaded by Mayo County Council will be paid over to the airport in coming weeks. The initiative, which was first mooted in late 2014, will see county councils in Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, and Galway City Council purchase a 17.5 per cent stake in the airport, which celebrated its 30th birthday this year.

McDonnell becomes county's first citizen

Fianna Fáil councillor Al McDonnell was elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council for the next 12 months on Monday morning this week at the council's annual general meeting. This is the second time that Cllr McDonnell has been elected as Cathoirleach, having previously worn the chain of office in 1998. The Ballyglass based councillor first became a councillor in 1987 when he replaced former minister and European commissioner Padráig Flynn on the council, and he has been elected to the council in each of the subsequent local elections since.

Castlebar trialogue meeting
Trialogue is an open forum for discussion on mental health issues. Users of the mental health services, carers, health care professionals, their friends and everyone in the community are welcome. A trialogue group is a neutral space where communities can gather to develop their understanding of mental health issues, the challenges of maintaining mental health and to transform thinking on developing better services and healthy communities. The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm in GMIT, Castlebar. The next meeting is on Tuesday April 12 in GMIT at 7pm, and is about self-awareness. Room number is expected to be P105 - it's up the main stairs.

The County Final of Scór na bPaistí will be held in Breaffy GAA Centre on Saturday April 16 at 2pm. This promises to be a fantastic final with winners coming through from the four divisional finals held over recent weekends. In the words of one adjudicator "The standard has never been so high " so with that in mind we can look forward in anticipation to a wonderful final.

Anam Cara meeting

Anam Cara is holding its monthly Parent Evening on Thursday January 21 from 7.30pm to 9pm in the Family Centre, Chapel Street, Castlebar (weather dependent). Anam Cara services are available free of charge to all bereaved parents. For further information see www.anamcara.ie, email [email protected], or call (01) 4045378.

Anam Cara is an organisation that supports bereaved parents, Anam Cara support groups are situated throughout Ireland and provide parents a safe, comfortable, environment where they have the opportunity to connect with other bereaved parents. Anam Cara is an inclusive organisation where parents do not identify themselves by their children’s age, how they died, or if their death was recent or many years ago. What Anam Cara provides is a safe place for bereaved parents to connect with others who understand the intensity of the grief and loss. Although Anam Cara does not offer counselling, each group has a lending library and information on the other services available to parents and families in the local community.

MOG on the move

Mayo Organic Group is delighted to be moving around the county for 2016 and will be visiting new towns and new venues. The first meeting of the year will be held at the VEC, in Westport, on Thursday January 21, at 8pm prompt. Smallholder Tom Lally will give a talk on his organic journey, touching on his reasons for being organic, the many skills and products he incorporates within his farm, and where he hopes to be in future years. All are welcome, including past and potential members. A full and vigorous programme of presentations and outings is planned for the year, with plenty to interest everyone.
