All tight at the top of the Super League

Fri, Oct 16, 2009

Ballina Town knew it was never going to be easy to win this year’s Super League crown, and if any complacency slipped into their minds, last weekend they were brought back to earth. Ballina saw their lead at the top of the table cut from three points to one with three games left in the league.

In Green Road last weekend, they twice led against Straide and Foxford United and twice they were hauled back by the home side. Michael Duffy opened the scoring when he got on the end of a Derek Tansey throw to head home. But the game was level again on the break when Paul Fitzpatrick netted from a free kick at the edge of the area. But Ballina were back in the lead early on when Brendan Lavelle was able to head the ball to the back of the net following a flick on by Dwayne Helly. The final goal of the game came from another header when John Jordan had time and space to apply a neat finish. With the pressure on and Ballina knowing they can’t afford to slip up again, Brendan Kenny will have been drilling into his side all week the need to keep hold of a lead when they get it.

Ballina stay at the top of Mayo pack following derby win

Fri, Oct 16, 2009

Ballina kept their place at the top of the Mayo clubs in the Connacht Junior League with another win at the weekend. The Creggs Road club picked up their third win from three games this season with a hard fought win over Castlebar. The 12-5 win over Castlebar was played in Cloondeash. Castlebar, who are currently winless this season, would have hoped they could have seen off the side whom they beat in the Cawley Cup final last year, but they came up short. The homeside did get the first try of the game through Fintan Casey in the first half, but the north Mayo men got their own touch down just before the break when Michael Clarke touched down. There was little separating the sides until Stephen McCarron got in for a try that was converted by Andy Moynihan. That scored condemned Castlebar to their fourth loss on the bounce, but the county town side have managed to pick up three losing bonus points so far this season, so a win should be on the horizon for them in the near future. This weekend they will get their chance to pick up a win again, but this one looks like a long shot for them. They have to make the trek to second in the table Monivea, who have four out of four wins so far this season and only trail leaders Sligo by one bonus point. Last weekend the Monivea boys saw off bottom of the table Tuam by 34-0 away from home. Ballina will look to pick up their fourth win of the campaign when they entertain Galwegians at home, Wegians come into the game with one win from three and weren’t in action last weekend, so Ballina should feel confident of taking the points on Sunday, but will probably come up short of getting a bonus point win.

Westport picked up their third win last weekend with a seven point win over OLBC in Galway. The Bulls have been having a good season despite many predictions that they would struggle this term. Despite going down 7-0 at one stage the Bulls pulled together to fight back with tries from Joe O’Malley, Eoin Joyce and Alan Cusack along with some good kicking by Eddie Walsh to dig out the win. This weekend, the Bulls have to take on table toppers Sligo in Carrowholly, while Sligo should take the points. Westport won’t make it easy and will fight tooth and nail for the win, and will be in with a good shout of getting their second bonus point of the year.

An exclusive night of music comes to Bar Ritz

Fri, Oct 09, 2009

In what promises to be a brilliant night of music for the town of Castlebar next Saturday, October 17, three of Ireland’s finest groups come to Bar Ritz with Finbar Hoban Proudly Presents… in association with the GMIT student union, (Mulroy’s Bar) in Castlebar. The Brilliant Things from Dublin are a new offering of intelligent synth-pop. They consist of Marie and Greg French and the title of their first EP is Stronger Than Romeo. Both in their twenties, they independently experienced various aspects of the music industry before getting together earlier this year. If you enjoy upbeat alternative synth pop then this will be right up your street.

Codes will be next up. They have just recently released their new album called Trees Dream In Algebra. The album reached number 18 in the top 20 Irish album charts last week. The band are not content with trend following, the group have taken the recognisable four-piece band formula and moved into something entirely their own. Codes have being getting lots of radio airplay with their single ‘This is Goodbye’ and Irish critics are describing their sound as the next big thing in this country. Earlier this year Codes supported Keane in the 02 in Dublin and also made an appearance on RTE 2s The Café just last week.
