As part of Ballina Arts Centre’s redevelopment campaign to build a theatre for the town, a fundraising gourmet lunch was held in the Ice House Hotel on Heritage Day recently. Entrepreneur Seán Gallagher, from RTÉ 1’s Dragon’s Den was guest speaker at the lunch, while the food on the day was prepared by the Ice House’s award-winning head chef Gavin O’Rourke, in what is now tipped to become an annual attraction.

Consumers are spending again and playing outdoors as recession lifts

Consumers are starting to splash out again in response to the first few rays of hope that the recession is over. That’s according to a national telephone directory service which reports that recent trends in enquiries for the second quarter of this year reveal that fun is back in fashion with personal spending and outdoor adventure high on the agenda.

“Enquiry calls for this period provides an interesting snapshot of the way Irish people are living their lives,” said Susan Branchflower, chief executive. “It’s good to see the Irish sense of humour is still going strong with requests for joke shop details increasing by 36 per cent, hiring of bouncing castles (+28 per cent), playing paintball (+92 per cent) and going to costume parties, with requests for costume hire shops increasing by an amazing 289 per cent.

Ninety new jobs for Mayo

Tesco Ireland is to create 90 jobs in the Swinford area after its announcement on Wednesday that it intends to invest €113 million in the country with the creation of a total of 748 new jobs. Minister for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary welcomed the news which is of “significant benefit to the local economy”.

Consumers advised to ensure electrical contractors are registered

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) is urging people in County Mayo that when employing an electrician, they make sure to to use one of the 125 registered electricians available to them. This advice comes as part of a campaign to make people aware of the need to hire a registered electrical contractor when getting electrical work done in their home and to ask for a certificate when the work is complete, thereby promoting safety in the home.
