Major celebrations for fortieth anniversary of Scór in Mayo

Former GAA president Seosamh MacDonncha will be the special guest at the launch of the Mayo GAA 40th anniversary Scór commemorative publication on Friday, March 27 in the McWilliam Park Hotel.

The 200 page Scór publication traces the history of the organisation from 1969 to the present day in Mayo with stories and tales from parish halls and clubs all over the county. The record books were trawled for this publication, parish halls were revisited, and tall tales of success on the stage are all retold from Achill to Aughamore and from Belmullet to Ballaghadereen.

The special celebrations on Friday, March 27, in the McWilliam Park Hotel will include a four-course meal, publication launch, and special concert with past All-Ireland Scór winners and a night of nostalgia and dancing with the Heather Breeze Ceilí Band.

“It was a mammoth task to put this publication together but we decided that Scór has played an integral part of every GAA club in the county over the past 40 years and this book is in honour of all those past and present that have competed, promoted, and supported cultural activities in their clubs down the years,” said Paddy Muldoon, chairperson of the commemorative committee.

The comprehensive Scór publication covers all cultural activities from set dancing to singing and figure dancing to recitations. All past All-Ireland Scór winners from Scór na nÓg and Senior Scór will feature in the publication as well as some of the humour and history behind the success stories down the years.

Mayo GAA chairperson James Waldron complimented the GAA cultural committee on their initiative and said the county board was delighted that this publication was being launched as part of the GAA’s 125th celebrations.

“When the new €16 million McHale Park development is completed there will be a special Mayo GAA museum section and this publication will be very much part of that collection,” he said.

The commemoration committee, which comprises Paddy Muldoon (cathaoirleach ), Piaras Ó Raghallaigh, Seamus Ó Dufaigh, Prionsias Ó Maolmhuaidh, John Muldoon, Kathleen Corcoran, Aidan Tighe, Tomás Mac Sheáin, Tony Finnerty, Una Ní Ghabhlainn, and Vincent Walsh, is inviting all GAA clubs in Mayo, former Scór competitors, and supporters to join them for what plans to be wonderful night of entertainment on Friday, March 27, in the McWilliam Park Hotel.

Tickets for the banquet dinner, dance, and concert are €30 and are available from the McWilliam Park Hotel, committee members or Sean Feeney.
