The Greens are coming west to talk farming and agriculture

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan will be among the speakers at an event to debate the future of family farming in the West.

Hosted by the Green Party, the event will take place on Thursday March 8 at 7.30pm in the Valkenburg Hotel in Ballinrobe. The night is billed as as 'Let's talk farms, families, futures' and Deputy Ryan will speak on a variety of issues.

Other speakers and guest from the Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association, the IFA Family and Social Affairs Committee, West Women in Farming and Mayo Organic Group have been invited to the event.

Green Party Mayo rep Mags Sheehan said the evening would be an opportunity to talk about problems and opportunities for farmers in the west.

“Following the consultation evening on the future of CAP in Claremorris recently, we know there is a lot of anger out there at the inequalities within the farming sector, and about the use of land for conifer plantations, this event will be another opportunity to discuss some of the problems, and indeed, opportunities, for farmers in the West.”

Green Party agriculture spokesperson and Mayo native Pippa Hackett will talk about supports available for farmers to diversify.

The evening will also be an opportunity to meet the Green Party candidates for the next general election, Mags Sheehan who will be running in Mayo, and Pauline O'Reilly in the Galway West constituency, which also takes in parts of south Mayo.
