The Breaffy Clubs Spinning Experience

I decided to sample the spinning experience in Breaffy Leisure Centre. Cathy Geraghty, leisure club manager, organised a session for me. I arrived for the 7.15 session on Thursday evening and was met by the fit looking and softly spoken Ray Kirrane. Ray explained that a spinning workoutis an excellent way to burn calories, build muscles, and relieve stress.

The workout employs a stationary bike, which has various tension levels. A spinning workout of 45 minutes could allow you to burn up to 500 calories, which is a huge amount when compared to other types of workout. However, the amount of calories you burn will depend on the intensity of the workout. The spinning workout can help you build muscle tone. The workout will focus on the core muscles, as well as the buttocks and thighs. You can increase and decrease the tension of the bike; this is similar to riding up and down a hill. While you pedal, you will work your thighs and calves. If you maintain the correct position on the bike, you will also work on your abdominal muscles. When you pedal faster, you are likely to burn fat. When you pedal slower and have a higher tension, you will work your muscles.

A spinning workout is a low impact exercise. This means that it won't put pressure on knees and joints, as other exercises can do. Any type of exercise is known to relieve stress. However, a spinning class can be a more efficient stress reliever than most types of exercise.

The other class members began to arrive and on a quick count I was surprised to see an almost 50/50 split between male and female. The class starts and Ray's voice and demeanor changes to that of Mr Motivator coupled with loud music. No more nice guy. He took us through a programme of interval training with short rests in between. While many of the class members were obviously very advanced, spinning is for everybody regardless of age, weight, or fitness level. I also noticed a good level of banter between the class and it was very welcoming and encouraging.

The session ends with some stretching exercises. I think it will take a few more weeks before I master these but there is no pressure and everybody can work at their own pace provided you give it your best shot. I definitely will be back. Spinning classes are held on a Tuesday and Friday morning at 6.45am for all you early risers and Wednesday evening at 7.15pm.
