Title race enters its final stages

Soccer: Mayo League

Westport United will look to take another step to retaining the Super League title on Sunday when they host Ballyheane, the champions are three points clear of Manulla at the top of the table with three games left to go in the division.

In their last outing they saw off Ballina Town 2-1 thanks to a brace from David Hoban and they will be confident of picking up another vital three points this weekend. When the side met in the league previously in May, United were pushed right to the pin of their collar by Ballyhane - eventually winning 3-2 thanks to another brace from Hoban and one from Patrick Calvey. Their opponents on Sunday could prove the team who were decisive in the defence of the title, having held second placed Manulla to a 3-3 draw a fortnight ago with Jamsie Finnerty scoring a hat-trick in that one.

Manulla will look to keep themselves in contention going into the final brace of games when they host bottom of the table Achill Rovers in Carramore. The previous league meeting of these sides was a thriller back in May, with Manulla edging it by the odd goal in seven on a scoreline of 4-3, with Chris Maughan, Padraig Mulroe, Paul Lawless, and Michael Guilfoyle all hitting the net. Achill look doomed to relegation sitting eight points off safety with just three games to go, they picked up a point in their last game drawing 3-3 with Straide and Foxford United with Brandon McGing, Cory Kilbane, and Cyril Guedje finding the target in that one.

The sides sitting in third and fourth place in the table will meet on Saturday evening, when Castlebar Celtic host Claremorris in Celtic Park. There are six points between the sides in the table with the Hoops holding the advantage heading into this one. Claremorris won 3-2 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. In their last league games, Celtic recorded a big 5-2 over Glenhest Rovers with Dainel O'Toole hitting the net twice, Levi Barrett, Ioseph O'Reilly, and Imoh Atoi grabbing one each. Claremorris were 2-0 winners over Ballyglass in their most recent league game with Dean Roddy and Matthew Peters the men finding the back of the net for them in that one.

Glenhest Rovers who are four points clear of second bottom Ballyheane will be hoping they can stretch that lead this weekend when they travel to Green Road to take on Straide and Foxford United. Rovers went down 5-2 to Castlebar Celtic in their last game, while Straide and Foxford United were held to a 3-3 draw by Achill Rovers. The final game of the Super League weekend is the meeting of Ballina Town and Ballyglass, the north Mayo men pushed Westport United all the way in their last game going down 2-1 at home, while Ballyglass were beaten 2-0 by Claremorris, there are seven points between the sides in the table, with Ballina looking for a win to ensure they ease any relegation fears they may have heading into the final two rounds of fixtures.
