Jaguar F-Pace wins World Car of the Year

The Road to World Car journey ended today with the declaration of a double win for Jaguar Land Rover. The Jaguar F-Pace won the 2017 World Car Design of the Year award as well as the overall 2017 World Car of the Year.

The winner was announced during a press conference hosted by the Bridgestone Corporation at the New York International Auto Show.

Dr Ralf Speth, CEO Jaguar Land Rover, said the F-PACE was designed and engineered as a performance SUV with exceptional dynamics, everyday usability and bold design.

"Winning these two awards endorses the talent and great work of our teams that have delivered the world’s most practical sports car and Jaguar’s fastest selling vehicle,” he said.

The Jaguar F-Pace was chosen from an initial entry list of 23 vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of 10, then three finalists as announced at Geneva Motor Show: the Audi Q5, the Jaguar F-PACE and the Volkswagen Tiguan,

To be eligible for the overall World Car award, the candidates must become available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning January 1, 2016 and ending May 31, 2017.

This year, vehicles were selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprising 75 top-level automotive journalists from 23 countries around the world. The Irish juror is Eddie Cunningham, motoring editor of the Irish Independent.

Previous World Car of the Year winners were the Mazda MX-5 (2016 ), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2015 ), Audi A3 (2014 ), Volkswagen Golf (2013 ), Volkswagen Up! (2012 ), Nissan Leaf (2011 ), Volkswagen Polo (2010, Volkswagen Golf (2009 ), Mazda2 (2008 ), Lexus LS460 (2007 ), BMW 3-Series (2006 ), and the Audi A6 (2005 ).

World Green Car

The Toyota Prius Prime was also declared the 2017 World Green Car at the New York International Auto Show.

This is the second consecutive World Green Car win for Toyota. The Mirai won last year’s World Green Car title.

The Toyota Prius Prime was chosen from an initial entry list of 12 new vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of three finalists which were the Chevrolet Bolt, the Tesla Model X and the Toyota Prius Prime.

Previous World Green Car winners were: the Toyota Mirai (2016 ), BMWi8 (2015 ) BMW i3 (2014 ), Tesla Model S (2013 ), Mercedes-Benz S 250 CDI BlueEfficiency (2012 ), Chevrolet Bolt (2011 ), Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion (2010 ), Honda FCX Clarity (2009 ), BMW 118d with Efficient Dynamics (2008 ), Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec (2007 ) and the Honda Civic Hybrid (2006 ).

Mercedes-Benz E-Class keeps on winning top awards

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class just keeps on collecting major awards.

The new E-Class was declared the 2017 World Luxury Car at the announcement of the World Car Awards.

This is the third World Luxury Car win for Mercedes-Benz having captured this year's title after back-to-back titles in 2015 (Mercedes-Benz S-Coupe ) and 2014 (Mercedes-Benz S-Class ).

Mercedes-Benz made history in 2015 with a triple win in three of five categories: World Car of the Year (C-Class ), World Luxury Car (S-Coupe ) and the World Performance Car (AMG GT ).

This year’s winner was chosen from an initial entry list of nine prestigious cars from all over the world, then a short list of three finalists as announced at the Geneva Motor Show - the BMW 5 Series, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the Volvo S90 / V90.

Previous World Luxury Car winners were the BMW 7 Series (2016 ), Mercedes-Benz S Coupé (2015 ) and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (2014 ). The award was first created in 2014 to acknowledge higher-priced premium models selling in more limited numbers worldwide.

World Performance Car

The Porsche Boxster Cayman won the 2017 World Performance Car. No stranger to the World Car Awards programme, the win marks the fifth time that Porsche has won the World Performance Car title. The company previously won in 2014 (Porsche 911 GT3 ), 2013 (Porsche Boxster/Cayman ), 2012 (Porsche 911 ) and 2006 (Porsche Cayman S ).

The Porsche Boxster Cayman was chosen from an initial entry list of seven cars, then a short list three finalists as announced at the Geneva Motor Show - the Audi R8 Spyder, the McLaren 570s and the Porsche Boxster Cayman.

Previous World Performance Car winners were the Audi R8 Coupe (2016 ), Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (2015 ), then three Porsche wins in a row: the 911 GTE in 2014, Boxster/Cayman in 2013, and 911 in 2012.

Ferrari won the 2011 World Performance title for the 458 Italia while Audi’s R8 V10 won in 2010, the Nissan GT-R in 2009, Audi R8 in 2008, Audi RS4 in 2007 and the Porsche Cayman S in 2006.
