Get active for Spring Forward festival

Westport Smarter Travel is holding a host of events to celebrate the summer, the longer days, and achievements of Westport Smarter Travel and the community. The festival which kicked off on Wednesday and runs until Saturday April 30 and will began with a Walk to Work (WOW ) day, and last night Thursday April 21, the Westport Operation Transportation winners were announced at an award ceremony in Westport Town Hall. The participants and winners received their awards from a very special guest, Luke Concannon of Nizlopi, most well known for "The JCB Song" which reached number one in the UK and Irish charts.

International Earth Day takes place today, Friday April 22, and to celebrate Mayo County Council is giving free trees to people to plant at home. Call into Westport Civic Offices on Earth Day to collect your tree. If you ever wonder what you can do to help protect the planet and live more sustainably, WESCO is running a Sustainable Living Workshop from 10am to 4pm in Westport Woods Hotel tomorrow, April 23. This course is open to everyone, free of charge with a light lunch provided. To register email [email protected].

On Sunday April 24 parishioners are invited to Walk (or Park n’ Stride ) to Church to celebrate Spring Forward and Earth Day and to help Westport become an eco-congregation. On Monday April 25 Anthony Murray begins a four week cycling course for adults. The course will run on the greenway focusing on developing basic skills of participants so that over the course of the four weeks they will move from the safe environs of the greenway to becoming confident cycling on the road. Meet and sign on at Westport Leisure Park at 6.30pm on Monday 25. The course costs €8.50 if you drop in each day or book four classes for €30. Would you like get to know Westport’s newer Greenways? Join Lorella of Westport Ambassadors at 11am on Tuesday April 26 at Westport Town Hall for a gentle walk exploring Westport’s newer greenways.

The public are invited to join in and make the second Westport Walks Wednesday even bigger and better than the first. Choose to leave the car at home or in a Park n’ Stride location and walk, cycle, scoot or carpool to town helping reduce traffic, pollution, and improve road safety. Secondary schools will get involved on Thursday April 28 through their Greenest Class and Smartest Travel class competitions and on Friday April 29. Noel Gibbons, Mayo County Council's road safety officer, will celebrate the county wide event, Green and Red thumb Road Safety day with Westport primary schools.

The Spring Forward festival will finish up with the first bike buffet of the year on Friday April 29 meeting at Westport Town Hall at 6.30pm. This will be ‘A taste of Mayo’ Bike Buffet as it leads in to Mayo Day on Saturday April 30, four delicious Mayo courses for just €20.
