Maloney's Dream comes to Castlebar

Branar Téatar do Pháistí will present Maloney’s Dream/Brionglóid Maloney, a theatre show for children, as part of its 1916 commemoration programme at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar.

Maloney's Dream is an action-packed, bi-lingual show full of live music, physical theatre and puppetry. Created specifically for young audiences aged eight and upwards, this is a captivating story of how one man’s dream collided with the birth of a nation.

Its Easter week 1916. Thaddeus Maloney returns home to Ireland to realise his dream of opening a new hotel on Easter Monday on Sackville Street (now O’Connell Street ). However the events of that week impact his plans. Using diary entries and recorded personal accounts, the show explores the impact the Rising had on the lives of ordinary people and aims to bring the truly human stories to the foreground.

Speaking about Branar’s new show, director Marc MacLochlainn commented: "In Maloney’s Dream we’re exploring what life was like for the ordinary people in Dublin during what we now know was an extraordinary period in Ireland’s history. We’ve created a fictional hotel and placed it on O'Connell Street and we invite audiences to join Thaddeus Maloney as he prepares to open his hotel. Audiences can also connect with the show long before they come to the theatre through our interactive website.”

Performances are open to the general public and to schools. School performances are aimed at second to sixth class pupils. With an ensemble cast of six performers, directed by Marc Mac Lochlainn, Maloney’s Dream combines physical performance with original live music and puppetry, which has become a distinctive feature of Branar’s shows.

Maloney's Dream will for one night only on Monday April 18 at 7pm at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar. For full details see www.maloneysdream.ie
