Man dies in Achill after car enters flood water

Gardai in Westport are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Dugort, Achill at approximately 10pm last night.

The man has been named locally as Roger Grainger an 81-year-old retired cleargyman from the UK who had recently moved to the area. There was efforts to rescue Mr Gainger by locals, but they were unable to reach him and they had to wait for emergency services to arrive at the scene. 

The 81-year-old was fatally injured when the car he was driving, and the sole occupant, entered flood water and left the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar. This stretch of road is currently closed pending an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses to contact Westport Garda Station on (098 ) 50230, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line (1800 ) 666 111 or any Garda Station.
